Hospital pills ‘Myanmar bound’

The pills contain the active ingredient pseudoephedrine, a common decongestant that is a chemical precursor used in the production of methamphetamine.

A joint investigation by the DSI, police and the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) suggested the pills confiscated from an Uttaradit hospital and another hospital in Udon Thani were destined to be smuggled into Myanmar through Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai, Pol Lt Col Phong-in Inkhao, head of the DSI’s security cases office, said yesterday.

Smuggling gangs had paid someone 1 baht per tablet to remove the pills from their packages and when the drugs were smuggled into Myanmar successfully, the prices would be marked up to 8 baht a tablet, said Pol Lt Col Phong-in.

Late last month, police concluded that a senior pharmacist at Udon Thani Centre Hospital and at Thong Saeng Khan Hospital in Uttaradit was involved in smuggling the cold and allergy pills from the hospitals.Police found nearly 65,000 pills Udon Thani and 975,000 pills at Uttaradit.

Preliminary police investigation results showed the pharmacist in Udon Thani acted alone and no one else was involved, said Pol Lt Col Phong-in.

DSI investigators are trying to figure out if others at the hospitals might be involved in helping smuggle the pseudoephedrine pills.

Procedure dictates that any purchase of cold pills containing pseudoephedrine from a hospital must first be approved by the hospital’s director, said Pol Lt Col Phong-in.

The DSI also found that both cases were probably linked to the arrest of a pseudoephedrine smuggling gang in Chiang Mai’s San Kamphaeng district last month, he said.

Pol Col Kowit Charoenwattanasak, Udon Thani’s police chief, said the ONCB has frozen the assets of Somchai Sae-Kow, the pharmacist in Udon Thani, including 7 million baht in bank accounts and a Honda Civic.

The mother of Mr Somchai, who disappeared after learning about the police investigation, said she would try to locate her son and ask him to meet with police, Pol Col Kowit said.

Blasts linked to ‘global tensions’

The series of blasts in Bangkok that severely wounded an Iranian bomber are linked to global political tensions, a Thai official said Wednesday, after Israel accused Tehran of involvement.

“Yesterday’s incident was caused by current international tensions in world politics,” National Security Council secretary-general Wichean Potephosree told a news conference on Wednesday morning.

“It’s happening not only in Thailand but also elsewhere.”

A man carrying an Iranian passport had his legs blown off as he hurled an explosive device at Thai police in one of three blasts in Bangkok on Tuesday, officials said.

The explosions came a day after bombers targeted Israeli embassy staff in the capitals of India and Georgia, with a female diplomat seriously wounded in New Delhi, in attacks that were plotted by Iran, according to Israel.

Thai bomb squad experts were called out to the Sukhumvit Road area in the east of the city after an apparently unintended blast at a house, following which three men were seen fleeing, authorities said.

One of the men hurled an explosive device at a taxi, which refused to stop, and then tried to throw another at police. The bomb bounced off a passing vehicle and exploded at his feet in the busy road, blowing off his legs.

Authorities detained a second Iranian man trying to board a flight out of the country while the third suspect was believed to have fled to Malaysia.

Bangkok has been on watch for a terror attack since police last month charged a Lebanese man suspected of planning a attack following a US warning that tourist areas might be targeted.

DSI steels itself for further arrests over dodgy materials

DSI officers yesterday raided three steel trading firms in in Phra Samut Chedi district of Samut Prakan and found two of them stocked substandard steel bars.

DSI director-general Tarit Pengdith said his team raided Thai Inter Steel Co, Wai Wing Enterprise Co and Worapan Wipapan Co, and found that the first two companies had substandard steel bars in their warehouses.

Mr Tarit said a search at Thai Inter Steel Co found one tonne of substandard steel bars and a search at Wai Wing Enterprise Co, owned by a Taiwan national, Kawin Lor, at Suk Sawat Soi 48, led to about 100 tonnes of substandard steel bars worth about 27 million baht.

It did not find illegal steel products at Worapan Wipapan Co.

Mr Tarit said the bars were made from recycled steel supplied by scrap collectors.

“These illegal products are dangerous to society because those operators bought dilapidated steel from scrap collectors at low cost and hot-rolled it into substandard steel bars _ they broke easily,” Mr Tarit said.

Chaiyong Kritpholchai, secretary-general of the Thai Industrial Standards Institute, said he would ask the Department of Industrial Works to close the raided factories and confiscate their machines.

He admitted punishments against the operators were light and he would push for harsher penalties.

Pol Maj Suriya Singhakamol, director of the DSI’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and Environment Crime, said the operators told interrogators they wanted to make standard steel rods but such products did not generate good sales because contractors usually demanded substandard ones to cut costs.

Pol Maj Suriya urged engineers and construction contractors to reject substandard steel. Late last month, the DSI seized about 290 tonnes of substandard steel bars from three warehouses in Bangkok and Samut Sakhon.
